Airbus calls on students for digital aerospace solutions
On June 5, Airbus officially launched the sixth Fly Your Ideas competition, a UNESCO-supported initiative which invites the next generation of innovators to propose and develop innovative solutions for real aerospace industry challenges. This year, the competition focuses on digital, and Airbus is seeking ideas that could change aerospace in the decades to come and create a safer, cleaner and better-connected world.
The competition, open to university teams from across the world, has welcomed the participation of over 20,000 students from more than 650 universities in over 100 countries… and Latin America’s representation has not gone unnoticed.
In 2015 Team Retrolley of University of São Paulo, Brazil, won runner-up for their cabin service trolley idea that enables recycling of cabin waste and, as such, improves airline operations. In 2013, Team Levar, made up of students from the same university as Team Retrolley, won first place for a luggage loading and unloading system for airplane cargo compartments aimed at reducing the workload of airport baggage handlers with an air cushion solution inspired by air hockey tables. And lastly, the Fly Your Ideas 2011 runner-up team was Team Condor from Chile – Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María, for their novel alternative design for an aerodynamic speed brake that would recover energy for on-board reuse.
This year Latin America’s university students once again have the chance to make their ideas fly and apply at www.airbus-fyi.com. Students will have the opportunity to showcase their ideas to an audience of industry experts during the final round, held live and in-person in 2019.
