Interjet orders 40 A320neo
It was 2005 when Airbus met with a group of industry professionals to discuss the set-up of a low cost airline that would stir up Mexico’s aviation industry. Interjet was born with an initial fleet of 7 used A320s but those same professionals were convinced that in order for their dream to succeed they would need to grow with the youngest and most efficient fleet. Following that objective, Interjet had ordered 10 new A320 in October 2005, an order which increased by 10 more aircraft in December 2006.
Today, Interjet operates a fleet of 36 A320s and after only seven years in operation has become the second biggest airline in Mexico, having quickly expanded their network throughout the country and into the United States, Central America and the Caribbean. Operating a young fleet has not only provided Interjet with excellent fleet operational reliability (99.8%) and economics, but also a more environmentally friendly aircraft, a cause the airline is actively engaged in.
In order to continue this sustained growth Interjet has recently decided to add a total of 40 A320neo to their fleet. The latest technologicaly advanced engines and the Sharklet wing-tip devices on the A320neo will provide a reduction in fuel burn and emissions of 15% while maintaining the commonality with Interjet’s current fleet. The A320neo extra range will allow for new destination opportunities and for the airline to proudly sell its product as one of the most environmentally friendly in the Latin American skies.
