Airbus advances on its decarbonisation journey
This year's Farnborough Airshow has become the scenario for the industry to further its commitment on its decarbonization journey and Airbus did not fall short of these key announcements.
Supporting SAF production
One of the biggest news items is that Airbus, Air France-KLM Group, Associated Energy Group, LLC, BNP Paribas, Burnham Sterling, Mitsubishi HC Capital Inc. and Qantas Airways Limited have jointly invested in a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Financing Fund to accelerate the production of SAF. This Sustainable Aviation Fuel Financing Alliance (SAFFA) investment fund of around US$200 million was established with the objective of accelerating the availability of SAF by financing mature SAF production technology, such as those using waste-based feedstocks. Investments will be diversified across different SAF production pathways and regions.
Also on the SAF front, Airbus announced its investment in LanzaJet, a leading sustainable fuel technology company and producer. This will support the development of the Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) pathway, an important step required to produce SAF at scale, enabling LanzaJet to further expand its capacity to scale its proprietary Ethanol-to-SAF process technology.
Advancing on hydrogen technologies
Airbus is actively engaging with key partners at a regional and international levels to facilitate the development of the hydrogen ecosystem. This is an essential step to advance on our ambition to launch the first hydrogen-powered aircraft ZEROe by the middle of the next decade.
During Farnborough, Airbus announced its new partnership with Avolon, marking this as the first collaboration of the ZEROe Project with an operating lessor. Airbus and Avolon will investigate how future hydrogen-powered aircraft could be financed and commercialized through the leasing business model.
Another key area to achieve this journey is operations, for which Airbus and the global association, Airports Council International (ACI) have signed a cooperation agreement to support the industry's efforts to reduce the impact of aviation. This partnership leverages each other's strengths to make significant progress in both decarbonization and aircraft noise reduction. By combining Airbus technological expertise with ACI’s extensive global network and operational insights, Airbus aims to influence policies and standards that will support sustainable aviation and drive industry-wide innovation.
