Airbus introduces an innovative solution to disembark safely

Airbus has developed a method to avoid passengers crowding the aisle while offboarding thanks to an innovative lighting design.

This design created by Airbus engineers is based on simple traffic guiding principles: these include the use of different cabin illumination combinations to indicate which rows are set to disembark next. The lighting complements the verbal cues given by cabin crew to facilitate an orderly and rush-free exit from the plane.

Lighting designers and software engineers program cabin lights to enable one color or a combination of colors at a time, to space out disembarkation in a certain order and direction: front to back, or back to front. Color schemes can be adapted to each airline’s brand or to the region or country of operation. A staggered row-by-row deplaning has become common practice, supported by verbal cues from the cabin crew. Newly implemented health and safety guidelines stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic have made it necessary to find safe and low-risk alternatives when offboarding.

This disembarkment solution lies within Airbus’ Keep Trust in Air Travel initiative, through which the manufacturer has collaborated with multiple aviation stakeholders to inform passengers and the aviation sector as a whole regarding cabin air safety provided by HEPA - High Efficiency Particulate Arrestor - hospital-grade filters, renewal of cabin air every 2-3 minutes, and touchless technologies.

Under this same Keep Trust in Air Travel effort, Airbus also launched an app called Tripset to provide travelers with real-time information regarding health, safety and entry requirements for every destination.

With this in mind, the priority from check-in to disembarkment relies on providing a safe and enjoyable experience for passengers. As a result, it’s important to implement forward-looking technical solutions that contribute to the protection of passengers and crew.
