Final look at 2018

Before jumping into 2019, let’s take a look at what made 2018 an important year.

In the spotlight this year was the A321neo, leading the recent upsizing trend in commercial aviation.

Airlines like VivaAerobus and Volaris upconverted their A320s to this most efficient jetliner or purchased additional A321neos in double digits thanks to the aircraft's expanded capacity, optimized cabin space and the Airbus Cabin-Flex  option, which further extends the aircraft’s maximum seating capacity to 244 seats, while keep the highest standards of passenger comfort.

Speaking of trends, according to the Airbus Global Market Forecast (GMF) announced just a few weeks ago, we are very optimistic that the region will remain resilient despite some recent economic challenges.  Air travel is expected to double in the next two decades thanks to the anticipated growth of the region’s middle class from 350 million people to 520 million by 2037, and evolving airline business models making travel more accessible.

Airbus also made history this year when it partnered with Bombardier and brought the A220 to life. Previously known as the C-Series, Airbus now manufactures, markets and supports the A220 Family, which covers the 100 to 150 seat segment and perfectly complements Airbus’ existing best-selling A320neo Family.

And finally, I would be remiss if I didn't mention my dear friend and mentor Rafael Alonso's retirement after selling nearly 2,000 airplanes over a 40-year career at Airbus.

While 2018 was filled with special milestones, I see amazing things on the horizon in 2019.  Thanks to our Noticias Airbus readers for your interest and we look forward to bringing you more regional aviation insights in 2019.
