Viva Air Peru is born

May 9 of this year marked the launch of Viva Air Peru, the second Viva Air undertaken by the LCC developer Irelandia Aviation. Just a few weeks later, VivaColombia celebrated five years since their official launch on on May 25, 2012.

As announced by the airline, Viva Air Peru has started its commercial operations by offering service between Lima and destinations such as Piura, Trujillo, Arequipa, Tarapoto, Iquitos and Chiclayo, and has a lofty ambition: to transport more than 700,000 passengers in its first year while lowering existing airfare pricing by 50 percent. This ambition has already become a reality as Viva Air Peru passengers are able to purchase, for example, a one way ticket from Lima to Trujillo (roundtrip booking) starting at US$18.

For this new undertaking, Viva Air has once again placed its trust in the A320, the best-selling single aisle family, to serve yet another booming Latin American market. At the Le Bourget air show, during which Airbus and Viva announced the closing of an MOU for 50 A320 aircraft, William Shaw, CEO and founder of VivaColombia, a Viva Air company, reiterated that the A320 “performs better than its competitior within the Latin America region where challenging hot and high airports are very commonplace.” He also emphasized that “the A320 provides a lower cost base allowing Viva to reduce prices in the marketplace.” William also stated that on some routes Viva has been able to reduce fares by up to 70 percent and the market expended by about 325 percent, and recognizes that the A320 has been a contributor to that.

Irelandia Aviation is a global leader when it comes to starting LCCs and their commitment to the A320 Family comes at a critical time. Latin America’s LCC model is growing, showing great potential for the “Bus-to-Air” concept which is proving to be more than just a growing trend, but a reality, within our region in the years to come.
