The Groundbreaking A220
Airbus’ newest Family member, the A220, recently achieved two major milestones that re-affirms the future potential for this aircraft.
The first milestone was the historic groundbreaking ceremony that took place at Airbus’ A220 Manufacturing Facility in Mobile, Alabama, in early 2019. With a target for the first delivery from the facility in 2020, this additional final assembly line is needed to meet the increased demand Airbus is seeing for the aircraft. This increased demand is demonstrated by the second major milestone: with the firm orders for 60 aircraft each by both JetBlue and Moxy plus an additional order for 15 aircraft from Delta Air Lines, the A220 program has surpassed 500 orders.
These orders from North American customers confirm the huge potential for a single-aisle aircraft with wide-body comfort, that offers at least a 20 percent fuel burn per seat saving compared to previous generation aircraft and that has achieved a 76 percent market share compared to its nearest competitor. With the amount of activity and interest we see in the A220, it is only a matter of time before we announce the first orders in Latin America.
