Boliviana de Aviacion goes long haul
Boliviana de Aviacion (BoA), the state-owned national flag carrier of Bolivia, was established by the Bolivian government under President Evo Morales in October 2007. Since then, the airline has progressively gained market share and has become the premiere airline in Bolivia. The airline has nine aircraft in its fleet.
At the end of last year, BoA anounced it would begin flying routes to Europe with a wet-leased A330-200 from Highfly. This represents one of the first of many initiatives the airline has taken toward international expansion and does not come as a surprise given its recent successes.
On December 7, 2012, an A330 painted in BoA colors made its first commercial flight from its base in Spain to Bolivia. With a 266-seat configuration, BoA plans to offer three to four weekly flights between the hub cities of Santa Cruz de la Sierra and Madrid. With a range of 7,000nm the A330 will allow the airline to offer non-stop service between Spain and Bolivia.
The A330 has a design which not only offers the highest level of cabin comfort, but is ideal in accomodating Bolivian travellers who tend to travel with more luggage. The A330 spacious overhead bins and cargo hold allows for passengers to transport carry-on items comfortably while permitting the airline to capitalize on exports to and from Europe.
BoA’s recent success can be seen with 81% domestic market share, 77% average load factor, and more than 1.5 million passengers transported in 2012. BoA reported a very good 75% load factor on its A330 during the holiday season and month of December.
We wish the best of success to Boliviana de Aviacion as it embarks on this new venture.
