Volaris, JetSMART order 62 additional A321neo aircraft at Dubai Air Show

Two of Latin America’s most important low cost carriers selected the A321neo in an efforts to increase their seat offering and modernize their fleets. Volaris (Mexico) and JetSMART (Chile, Argentina) will receive 62 A321neo aircraft as part of a 255 aircraft order by Indigo Partners, a private equity firm focused on worldwide investments in air transportation. Hungarian Wizz Air and U.S. operator Frontier round out the remaining order.

The firm order, which was signed at the Dubai Air Show (DAS) - the first major airshow to take place since the start of the pandemic - brought Indigo Partners’ total number of aircraft purchased to 1,145, all belonging to the A320 Family.

The 255 new aircraft will be distributed as follows:

  • Wizz Air: 102 in total, 75 A321neo and 27 A321XLR
  • Frontier: 91 A321neo
  • Volaris: 39 A321neo
  • JetSMART: 23 in total, 21 A321neo and 2 A321XLR

As part of the order, both Volaris and JetSMART will upconvert a total of 38 A320neo (19 each) from their backlog to A321neo, thus incrementing their seat offering in Latin America.

The new orders, which will primarily benefit the Mexican, Chilean and Argentine markets, will  contribute to the growth of air traffic during the second half of this decade. Orders of new aircraft help bolster the economy, through the creation of direct and indirect employment, more travel options for tourists and connecting families living in different cities. JetSMART will also be able to operate newer and longer routes from Chile and Argentina to Southern United States using the A321XLR.

The end of 2021 will mark another important milestone for Volaris, as the all-Airbus operator recently received its 100th aircraft, which began operations this month.

The new orders reflects both air traffic recovery after the 2020 hiatus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the global trend towards reducing aviation’s environmental footprint through the use of latest-generation aircraft.

With more than 7,550 orders from 122 customers worldwide since the programme launched in 2010, A320neo Family contributes to a 25 percent fuel and CO2 emission reduction and a 50 percent noise decrease thanks to the incorporation of high-tech engines and Sharklets.
